PTE Answer Short Question: Tips & Scoring
Answer Short Question is the simplest speaking task in PTE Academic: you hear a short general-knowledge question and reply with a single word or short phrase. They are quick points if you stay calm and answer with the obvious word — no full sentences required.
How Answer Short Question works
You hear a brief question — for example, 'What do we call the frozen form of water?' — and answer in one or a few words ('Ice'). The audio plays once and you respond after a short beep. You typically face several of these.
Strategy
- 1Listen carefully for the single piece of information being asked.
- 2Answer with the exact word or short phrase — do not pad it into a sentence.
- 3Respond promptly and clearly; confidence helps pronunciation.
- 4If you are unsure, give your best one-word guess rather than staying silent.
Keep it to the point
These questions test vocabulary and quick comprehension, not eloquence. The correct single word scores full marks; a long, rambling answer adds nothing and risks mispronunciation.
How Answer Short Question is scored
- Content is the main factor — the answer is essentially correct or incorrect (vocabulary).
- A correct, appropriate word earns the mark; an incorrect or missing answer earns nothing.
- Clear pronunciation ensures the system recognises your answer accurately.
Because each item is short and binary, these are easy marks — build everyday and academic vocabulary so the answers come instantly.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Over-thinking a simple question and missing the response window.
- Answering in a full sentence and mispronouncing it.
- Mishearing the question — listen for the key noun being asked about.
- Staying silent when unsure instead of giving a quick best guess.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my Answer Short Question response be?
Just one word or a short phrase — exactly what the question asks for. There is no benefit to a full sentence; the correct single word earns full marks.
How do I prepare for Answer Short Question?
Build broad vocabulary across everyday and academic topics — months, animals, professions, body parts, weather, and basic academic terms. The answers are common knowledge, so the more vocabulary you have ready, the faster you respond.
