PTE Summarize Group Discussion: Tips & Scoring
Summarize Group Discussion is a newer PTE Academic speaking task. You listen to several speakers discussing a topic, then summarise the main points of the discussion aloud. It rewards clear note-taking that tracks who said what, followed by a structured, fluent summary of the overall conversation.
How Summarize Group Discussion works
You hear a short discussion between multiple speakers, get a brief preparation time, then speak a summary of the key points and viewpoints. The audio plays once, so focused listening and notes are essential.
Note-taking strategy
- 1Identify the topic of the discussion immediately.
- 2Jot down each speaker's main point or stance with a quick label (S1, S2…).
- 3Note where speakers agree and where they differ.
- 4Capture any conclusion or shared outcome at the end.
Speaking template
- 1Open: 'The speakers discussed ___.'
- 2Viewpoints: 'One speaker argued ___, while another felt ___.'
- 3Common ground: 'They generally agreed that ___.'
- 4Close: 'Overall, the discussion concluded that ___.'
Summarise the discussion, not just one speaker
The task rewards capturing the range of viewpoints and the overall direction of the conversation — not repeating a single speaker's opinion. Show you tracked the whole exchange.
How Summarize Group Discussion is scored
- Content — covering the main points and differing viewpoints of the discussion.
- Oral Fluency — a smooth, continuous summary without long pauses.
- Pronunciation — clear, intelligible delivery throughout.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Focusing on one speaker and ignoring the others.
- Trying to quote speakers word-for-word instead of summarising.
- Long pauses while organising your thoughts — use the template.
- Running out of content early instead of covering the full discussion.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Summarize Group Discussion different from Re-tell Lecture?
Re-tell Lecture has a single speaker delivering a lecture, while Summarize Group Discussion has multiple speakers exchanging views. Your summary must capture the different viewpoints and the overall conclusion, not just one line of argument.
How do I keep track of multiple speakers?
Label them quickly in your notes (S1, S2, S3) and jot each speaker's key point beside their label. Then summarise the range of views and any common ground in your spoken answer.
